About Vienna University


The Opens external link in new windowUniversity of Vienna (Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis) was founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV, but was first housed at various locations. Only in 1623 after the incorporation of the Jesuit College it was housed in a Late Baroque academic College together with an Universitätskirche (university church) which still exists today as Old University. In 1753-55 the archduchess Maria Theresa ordered the new auditorium next to the academic college, which today houses the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The present main building of the University of Vienna was founded by Simon of Sina and completed in 1884. Since 1962 there is the Opens external link in new window“Neues Institutsgebäude” (NIG), a new university building which was famous for its 2007 closed paternoster; in 1998 the old General Hospital opened its gates as the Opens external link in new window“UNI Campus” (university campus); both, the NIG and the UNI campus, are situated close to the main building. Since the university in Vienna has no joint campus, there are also a number of university buildings across the whole area of Vienna.

The main building is situated at the Universitätsring, a part of the famous Ringstraße. The Opens external link in new windowUNI Campus, where the conference will be held, is situated at the corner Opens external link in new windowAlser Straße/Spitalgasse.
